You know that heavy feeling when you know you should be doing something, but you find excuses not to. You should be writing that blog post, or setting up that email sequence, or posting on social media but you keep putting it off, leaving you feeling icky and unfulfilled. You know you should do it — you just can’t bring yourself to take the action.

I’ve literally been doing this all day before writing this post. I sat at my computer, then remembered I needed to put the laundry in the dryer, then I folded the laundry that had been in the dryer. As I walked back to my computer I noticed the dishes hadn’t been done, so I did that. Then I thought “well the weather is really nice today, I should walk the dog and I can write later when it’s cold out.” Sound familiar?

So why does this happen?

Resistance often comes from fear — fear of failing, of being seen, or even of succeeding. But here’s the thing: the things we resist most are often the things that could change everything.

So how do we FIX it?

We lean into it.

The things we are most afraid of doing are usually the things that could change everything for us, and I’ve found that sometimes this very thing is what is causing the resistance itself. Because what happens if you do become successful? Will your relationships change? Will you become a different person?

But then I came to realize that:

1. The thought of staying in the same place is far more scary than the thought of growing and..

2. If you are working towards something you are in alignment with, the change will always be for the better.

When I feel resistance now, like I was before I started writing this post, I take that as a sign that I’m on the right path — because it’s scaring my subconscious. I take it as an opportunity to really lock in and prove to myself that it is safe and that I can commit to the things I know are in my best interest.

Easier said than done though, right?

Here are some of the strategies I use to break through:

  • Start small: Break the task into bite-sized pieces. Instead of sitting down to write a blog post, start with just writing the first paragraph.

  • Use a timer: Set a timer for 10 minutes and commit to working for just that long.

This will break you out of the cycle and most of the time once you get started you will usually want to keep doing more. That is when you will start to lean into that creative flow and all of a sudden your work will be done!

So next time you are staring at a blank page and then you decide to scroll TikTok real quick for “inspiration”… stop yourself right there. Take a deep breath, recognize its resistance, and then push through it. You will feel so accomplished and empowered every time you do.

If it all just feels too overwhelming and you really can’t break through it, or if writing for your business is less of a resistance issue and more of a time issue — it may be time to delegate. Writing doesn’t have to be another thing you resist, it can be something you hand off so you can focus on what you love most about your work, and I’m always here to help if you need.

Time to make some big changes in 2025!
