Then it’s time to learn about copywriting.
I used to think I would be a ranch hand forever. I didn't think I had anything more to offer to the world than good old fashioned hard work. But there was always a small part of me that hoped for a different life. Though it seemed like a dream that was out of my reach, I knew I had something creative inside me just waiting to be expressed. When I started to lean into it instead of pushing it away, the words started flowing, and there was no off switch. But how do you turn that creativity and passion for words into a career that still allows all the freedom to live a life on your terms?
Cue copywriting.

What is copywriting exactly?
Copywriting is the art of using words to communicate a message, tell a story, and inspire action. It’s not just about writing pretty sentences; it's about connecting with people on an emotional level and guiding them towards a decision—whether that's buying a product, signing up for a service, or simply engaging with a brand. Good copy doesn’t just inform; it captivates, motivates, and leaves a lasting impression. At its core, copywriting is all about turning ideas into words that make things happen. Isn’t it amazing how words can spark emotions and inspire people to take action? I’ve fallen in love with that process—and you just might too. But where do you begin?
How to Start Copywriting: A Simple 5-Step Guide
Learn the Basics – Start by familiarizing yourself with what copywriting is and the different forms it can take (web copy, emails, social media, product descriptions, etc.). Study examples from top brands and see what makes them stand out. Read books and take courses. You don’t need to spend a tonne of money to learn copywriting, there is a lot of free information out there. Although I’m sure the paid courses could potentially get you clients faster and have a lot of valuable information, they’re not necessary to become a copywriter – you can learn a lot on your own.
Pick a Niche – You don’t have to stick to one niche, but choosing an area of interest—whether it's personal growth, wellness, tech, or whatever—will help you target the right clients and build expertise faster. You can always change it later, but trust me when I tell you it is a lot easier to write about something you are passionate about or already have knowledge of, than it is to write about something completely new. Especially when you are starting out.
Practice, Practice, Practice – Start writing every day. Whether it’s a mock product description or a blog post, the more you write, the better you’ll get. And don't worry if it’s messy at first—just keep going! The brain is a muscle, it will take a while to get that creative side going, but once it starts to flow, that’s when magic happens. A good way to practice is to pick some brands that you already know and follow, and re-write some of their content or make up a piece for them. Reading and analyzing content and thinking “how could I make this better”, will get you using that creative part of your brain.
Build a Portfolio – You don’t need paid work to start your portfolio. Create sample pieces for imaginary clients or rework copy for existing brands. Your portfolio will help showcase your style and skills to potential clients. The practice pieces we talked about earlier would be great, especially if you’d like to work with those brands, or similar ones, in the future. Also keep in mind – your writing skills will change a lot the more you practice and learn. If you wait until you have a “perfect” piece to put on your portfolio, you’ll never get it built. It won’t be your best work at first, but that’s ok! Starting out messy is better than not starting at all. Just be sure to revise and adjust your portfolio as your skills grow.
Get Your First Clients – Join freelance platforms, reach out to businesses in your niche, or even offer to write for friends or local businesses for testimonials. Getting those first few clients will build your confidence and experience. Trust in yourself and the things you have learned, sometimes you have to just dive in and give it all you’ve got!
Starting your journey as a copywriter may seem overwhelming, but it all begins with believing in yourself and taking that first step. It doesn’t have to be perfect—trust me, I've been there, and I’m still in the early stages myself so I’m here with you. What matters is that you start. Copywriting offers endless possibilities, allowing you to channel your creativity, connect with like-minded brands, and create a life that gives you freedom and fulfillment. If a ranch hand from a little farm country with no college degree can do it, so can you. Just take that messy action, trust in yourself, and let your passion lead the way.
Now go start writing!
I believe in you 🙂
